It’s important to not rush a move to another country. There are many questions you should ask yourself, or things you need to sort out, and with Brexit happening on 31 January, and the transition period ending in December, we’ve compiled some information you should consider.
If you have moved to Sweden from abroad and are planning to live in Sweden for one year or more, you are generally required to be registered in the Swedish Population Register. When you have been registered you will be given a Swedish personal identity number (glossary: personnummer) and be registered as living in a building with an address. Your civil status and any relationship to your spouse, children or parent will be registered.
In order to be registered in the Swedish Population Register (folkbokförd) you need to notify the Swedish Tax Agency (glossary: Skatteverket) that you have moved to Sweden. This can be done by visiting one of our service offices (servicekontor).
Skatteverket offer an online service to ensure that you have everything you need to visit their service offices. Visit here to be taken through the form, fill it out and print it off with any evidence and go to one of the service offices. The form will first appear in Swedish, however in the top right of the box you can change the language to English.
You may find that after Brexit your application is denied and you need to go through Migrationsverket (glossary) to be able to move to Sweden. You need to apply outside of Sweden, however if you are already in Sweden there is a way you can register if you are living with a family member or spouse that is a Swedish citizen. Contact us for more information and we can direct you through this process.
If you are moving to someone in Sweden, you can make an online application via Migrationsverket here. You can then choose the best option for you, for example if you are married, or will be marrying.
If you are moving to Sweden to work, you can make an online application here.
If you are moving to Sweden to study, you can make an online application here.
